ABOUT GREEN RIVER SHIATSU

Zen Shiatsu is a form of manual bodywork therapy developed by Sensei Shizuto Masunaga in mid 20th century Japan.  Master Masunaga combined his university education in psychology with his family background in traditional Asian medicine practices.  After teaching at Namikoshi Shiatsu School for many years he found greater success treating patients with techniques he developed that synthesized the ancient with the modern.  He formed the Iokai Shiatsu School in Tokyo to formalize these ideas and to train new students in 'Zen Shiatsu'.

Within this lineage, Andy met Master Shunji Morimoto in 1994 and trained briefly before attending the Boston Shiatsu School, under Sensei Kiku Miyazaki, in 2001.  Upon graduation, he began a 10-year mentorship with Master Morimoto while building his private practice in western Massachusetts.

Our Story

IMG_0552.HEIC

GREEN RIVER SHIATSU is the fruition of a dream that Andy Mathey had decades ago to create a healing space for personal transformation through deep relaxation.

Andy's love of nature and respect for our shared human experience informs his daily work on and off the mat.  Through the sincere practice of shiatsu he seeks to remind each patient of their own innate capacity to heal and of our shared connection as one of a greater whole.  Understanding our bodies, in a similar fashion, as an integrated whole rather than as a disconnected collection of 'parts' is central to vitality and health.

A standard shiatsu session always treats the entire body to encourage a deep state of relaxation for healing.
